On Monday, December 8, 2025, Stefanie Urchs successfully defended her dissertation titled “Detecting Gender Discrimination in Natural Language Processing” at LMU and was thereby awarded the degree of Dr. rer. nat. in statistics. Her research addressed a pressing issue at the intersection of computer science, statistics, and linguistics and was highly relevant to society. The findings of her work make important contributions to understanding and reducing gender discrimination in AI systems and natural language processing (NLP). She was jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Stephanie Thiemichen and Prof. Dr. Veronika Thurner (Hochschule München), and by Prof. Dr. Christian Heumann and Dr. Matthias Aßenmacher (Department of Statistics, LMU Munich)
