Target group
Students and doctoral candidates at LMU who (will) deal with quantitative analyses in their thesis/thesis and
- have little or no statistical knowledge, or
- are interested in learning the freely available statistical software R.
In particular, it is advisable to attend the basic course in preparation for a consultation at StaBLab.
Course content
A basic course and an application-oriented advanced course are offered. The basic course is designed to teach the basics and consists of theory (short introduction to statistics) and many practical exercises (in-depth theory / working with the statistical open source software R).
The advanced course focuses on multivariate data analysis, regression and advanced data visualization, as well as the discussion of practical questions (preferably based on projects of the course participants).
PC workstations are provided. The basic course consists of three blocks, the advanced course of two blocks with two three-hour units each. It is advisable to attend both the basic and the advanced course, as both courses together form a unit in terms of content.

FAQ
1. Are there currently (or soon) any R courses, and is registration still possible?
The course announcement is sent out centrally by email to all LMU dean’s offices about two months before the course begins. All details regarding registration and the course are provided in this email.
Please register via the official Google form while it is open. If the course is already full, you will be placed on the waiting list automatically. Late registration or pre-registration outside the official period is not possible.
2. When do the next courses take place, and when does registration open?
Courses are held once per semester, usually in February/March and in October. The exact dates are announced about two months before the start of the course.
3. Which course is suitable for me – the Basic Course or the Advanced Course?
We recommend attending both courses. No prior knowledge of statistics or R is required for the Basic Course. Even participants with prior experience in R and statistics will benefit from the Basic Course as a valuable refresher. The content of the Basic Course is also the prerequisite for the Advanced Course.
Once accepted, you are automatically enrolled in both the Basic and Advanced Course.
4. How much R and how much statistics is covered?
The course consists of approximately 50% R and 50% statistics.
5. Can external participants join, or are there alternative offers?
Participation is restricted to LMU members. Please make use of the courses offered at your own institution or free online resources, such as the Essential Data Science courses.
6. Availability / Waiting list: What happens if the course is full? Are there leftover places, late registration, or pre-registration?
Please register through the official process. About one to two weeks after the deadline, you will be informed of the decision. If the course is fully booked, we maintain a waiting list. Late registration or pre-registration outside the official period is not possible.
7. Are there any course fees?
The course is free of charge for LMU members. External participants cannot take part.
8. What is the language of instruction?
The course is taught in German.
9. Is online (remote) participation possible?
No, the course takes place exclusively on-site. All materials are available on Moodle. On request, we can provide Moodle access to LMU-affiliated persons even without course participation.
10. Confirmation of registration: Has my registration/email been received?
Once you submit the registration form, your application is considered received. No additional confirmation is sent before the selection process. Please be patient.
11. Is it possible to attend only the theory part of the course?
No. Since theory and practice are closely integrated, the theoretical part cannot be attended separately.
12. Will a certificate of participation be issued?
Yes, certificates can be issued upon request after the course (Basic Course or Basic + Advanced Course). Whether the course can be credited to your study or doctoral program (e.g. in the form of ECTS credits) depends on the decision of your institute’s examination office. The course does not include an exam and therefore no grading.
13. Where can I find the course materials/slides?
All materials are provided on Moodle. Access details will be sent to you by email after acceptance.
14. Are solutions to the exercises provided?
Yes, they are available on Moodle.
